Congratulations to Jiya from Park Hill Juniors, winner of our 2016 This Girl Can Writing Competition for her essay on Charlotte Cooper.
As 2016 is the year of the Rio Olympics, the theme for this year's competition was to celebrate the emancipation of women in sport, focusing on the first women to take part in the Olympics at the Games in Paris in 1900.
We received over 150 entries from Year 5 & 6 Croydon pupils. We were really impressed with the quality of entries and it was a really tough call for the judges to chose the winners!
Here is an extract from Jiya's winning entry:
"...As people cheered, the tension of who was going to win became bigger and wilder, as the decisive moment drew near the cheering stopped and there was complete silence. All you could hear was the scuffling of chairs and the tennis ball hitting against the ground. The last rally to declare the winner now seemed to go on forever...
From that day forth, she inspired me to work hard and she taught a valuable lesson that you just have to keep trying no matter how many obstacles there are ahead of you...." Jiya (Yr6).
